I’m going to document some experiments with AI Large Language Model chatbots, to see how they can assist with creative writing, or to compare their artificially generated content with human stories.
First off, I asked Perplexity ( using GPT4.1 ) to give me seven writing prompts. I didn’t spend a lot of time on my prompt for the AI – “Give me 7 story writing prompts.“
Here are the 7 suggestions I was given;
- A reclusive inventor wakes up to find their latest creation has vanished—and the only clue is a cryptic message left in a language they thought was extinct.
- During a city-wide blackout, a group of strangers is trapped in an elevator. As secrets surface, they realize one of them is not who they claim to be.
- An aging detective, haunted by a decades-old unsolved case, receives an anonymous letter suggesting the answer has been right in front of them all along.
- After inheriting a rundown bookstore, a young woman discovers a hidden journal that seems to predict events in her life before they happen.
- In a world where memories can be bought and sold, a memory thief is hired to erase a painful past—only to uncover a conspiracy that could destroy everything.
- A small-town doctor begins to suspect that the mysterious illness spreading through the community is linked to a secret buried beneath the town’s oldest building.
- On the eve of a historic peace treaty, a diplomat’s child goes missing, forcing them to choose between their duty to their country and their family.
I thought some of those looked very familiar from previous experiments, but Perplexity assured me that these were all its own work, so I assume that must be true, since computers never lie.
First experiment. I’m going to take each of the prompts and simply ask for a 500 word story for each one, then post one per day for the next week…
